Vishnu Pai

Vishnu Pai is a Kochi-based stand-up comedian with more than ten years of experience on stage, and the co-founder of Comedy Lounge, the comedy collective behind Kerala’s modern stand-up scene. Long before “stand-up comedy” was a familiar phrase in Kerala, Vishnu was one of the few performers building it from scratch — writing material, testing it in front of unforgiving rooms, and slowly turning a niche art form into something Kerala now shows up for on a regular basis.

As a performer, Vishnu has headlined and featured in some of Comedy Lounge’s biggest lineup shows, including Straight Outta Kochi, the curated showcase spotlighting the best of Kerala’s comedy talent, performed everywhere from intimate venues on MG Road to bigger stages like PVR Lulu in Trivandrum. His comedy draws on the specific, sometimes absurd texture of Malayali life — the kind of material that lands hardest with an audience that’s lived it.

Vishnu’s other major contribution to Kerala’s comedy scene happens off stage. As the person who runs Comedy Lounge’s workshops and training programs, he’s responsible for taking total beginners through the unglamorous, essential parts of becoming a comedian — writing jokes that actually work, finding the right pitch and timing, learning to read a room, and most importantly, learning to bomb on stage and come back the next week anyway. It’s slow, repetitive work, and Vishnu has done it patiently with dozens of new comedians who now make up Kerala’s growing stand-up circuit.

He’s been described, fairly, as the soul of Comedy Lounge — the person whose decade-plus of stage time and genuine investment in new talent has helped take Kerala’s comedy scene from a handful of open mics to a real, self-sustaining ecosystem of comedians, audiences, and venues.
