Zakir Khan

Zakir Khan is a stand-up comedian, writer, and poet from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and one of the defining voices in Hindi-language comedy. He first broke through in 2012 by winning Comedy Central India’s India’s Best Stand-Up, and in the years since has built a career few Indian comedians can match — five hour-long specials, a podcast among the country’s most-streamed, and a fanbase that spans continents.

His specials — Haq Se Single (2017), Kaksha Gyarvi (2018), Tathastu (2022), Mannpasand (2023), and Delulu Express (2025), all on Amazon Prime Video — are built around the same thing that’s made Zakir’s comedy resonate so widely: he tells stories. Heartbreak, small-town memory, middle-class family life, the specific ache of being an average guy figuring things out — Zakir takes the ordinary and makes it land like poetry. His catchphrase “Sakht Launda” has long since outgrown the stage and become shorthand for an entire generation’s brand of guarded vulnerability.

That storytelling instinct comes from a real place. Zakir grew up in a family of classical musicians — he’s the grandson of sarangi maestro Ustad Moinuddin Khan — and holds a diploma in sitar himself. He’s spoken candidly about using humor as a shield growing up, which is part of why his comedy feels less like punchlines and more like someone reading you a chapter from their own life.

Zakir’s reach has gone well beyond India in recent years. He’s headlined Madison Square Garden and London’s Royal Albert Hall — the first Indian comedian to do either — and his most recent global run, the Papa Yaar tour, has taken him across North America, the UK, Ireland, and the UAE, selling out venues from Radio City Music Hall to a multi-night stadium residency back home. He’s crossed three million tickets sold across more than 150 cities, and his clips routinely rack up tens of millions of views — one of them, a bit about meeting a girl from Delhi, has crossed 85 million on its own.

Zakir has performed live in Kochi, where the city’s Hindi-speaking comedy audience turned out in full force for the same storytelling that’s made him a phenomenon nationally. For a crowd raised on his specials and clips, hearing those stories told live, in the room, hits differently — proof that Kochi’s appetite for big Hindi comedy is very real and only growing.
